Greg Merricks with Campus Cab

Along with its challenges and learning, 2020 created a deepening sense of community at UF. We experienced a renewed sense of common purpose and belonging, which has inspired a series of Staff Highlights—designed as a way to get to know more of the people that make the Gator Nation a community that celebrates diverse identities and contributions.  Campus Cab driver Greg Merricks was selected by Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Charlie Lane for our debut profile.

“Greg’s encouraging attitude and genuine concern for people make it a pleasure to interact with him. Greg consistently puts in extra effort to give his riders a positive experience.”

A UF employee for more than 35 years, Greg describes himself as a “people person,” a quality evident in the warmth of his demeanor. Greg says that the best part of his job is “…getting to meet people and having a chance to talk to and learn about the people that I do meet. I enjoy being able to answer questions about the campus, giving directions or my opinion when needed.”

With UF classrooms and other facilities spread across 2,000 acres, recently arrived faculty and staff can easily get turned around when they come to campus. “I enjoy helping people find their way,” says Greg, “and many new people need a ride to get to meetings or classes on time. I was proud to be chosen to be Curtis Reynolds’ chauffeur when he first came to campus.” As Vice President for Business Affairs, Reynolds oversees UF business and support services, including Transportation and Parking.  “He spoke to me about how valuable my work is to the University. Getting to talk to him is one of my favorite memories.”

Greg notes that meeting Dr. Lane has been another high point.

“My relationships with people like Dr. Lane and Curtis Reynolds have helped to make me the person that I am. I always try to be positive. If there’s a problem, I try to turn a negative into a positive.”

So, how did Greg react to being selected for our first Staff Highlight? Responding with a generous smile, Greg says, “It makes me feel that I am recognized as a person and not just an employee. I am so pleased to be part of the Gator Nation, maybe a little overwhelmed. I am blessed.”

Greg Merricks usually stays busy all day long as he ferries faculty and staff to meetings and work assignments across the University of Florida campus. His knowledge and friendly, welcoming presence ensure that everyone will have a timely and enjoyable ride. Thank you, Greg, for your loyal service.
